There are around 210 species of magnolias and they come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from shrubs to towering trees. But it’s the flowers that really catch the eye. Large, fragrant and often in shades of white, pink or purple, they’re just like nature’s way of showing off. Also stunning are the leaves in their bright green splendour.

Magnolias are not only beautiful to look at, they also have a history. Fossil records show that magnolias have graced the planet for millions of years, making them living relics. These plants have experienced many botanical dramas over time.

The next time you see a magnolia, take a moment to admire its timeless elegance – it's like having a piece of floral history in your garden.

Caring for magnolias is a bit like being a diva's personal assistant: you have to attend to their needs and they can be a little peculiar. Here you can find out everything you need to know about caring for magnolias:

1. Location, location, location: Magnolias prefer well-drained soil and a spot with plenty of sunlight. They don't like wet feet, so make sure the soil isn't soggy.

2. Watering Tips: Keep the soil constantly moist, especially during dry periods. The key is to water them frequently and thoroughly, but don't drown them (and this is a big but). Magnolias like water, but they also like to breathe.

3. The magic of mulch: Mulch is like the red carpet for magnolias. It keeps the soil cool, retains moisture and adds a touch of glamour. Just keep it away from the trunk – magnolias like a little privacy.

4. Pruning: Pruning involves shaping and removing dead wood. It's like giving your magnolia to a spa day. Do it in late winter or early spring, before the star-studded blooms appear.

5. Fertilize the star: Fertilize in spring with a balanced slow-release fertilizer. Magnolias are nutrient hungry and a well-nourished plant is a happy plant.

6. Pest Control: Keep an eye out for pests, especially mealybugs and aphids. Show these critters the VIP exit.

7. Winter Warmth: If you live in a cold climate, consider a cozy winter blanket. Mulch around the trunk will keep the roots warm, and if the frost is too severe, you can also place a burlap trellis over it.
